Did you know? …. If you passed your standard car B driving test after 1st January 1997 you are required by law to take a further test to tow trailers, horse boxes and caravans.

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 (including retests) you must pass a practical category B+E test to tow a trailer/caravan/horsebox/boat which exceeds 750kg on a vehicle weighing 3.5 tonnes; or vehicle and trailer combination over 3.5 tonnes.

With a standard B licence you are allowed to tow a trailer up to 750kg MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kg MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM

MAM= maximum authorised mass ie the permissable maximum weight, also known as the gross vehicle weight.

Hoot Hoot Driving School offer towing training to companies and individuals who require this additional category. We can offer initial assessments of ability, as well as structured training to pass the test. The test is conducted at an LGV test centre by Driving Standard Agency Examiners.

There is no requirement to take an additional theory test.

Training is conducted by a fully qualified DSA Driving Instructor and all manoeuvres are carried out on private land.

Once you have passed your B+E test you are entitled to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes MAM with trailers in excess of 750kg MAM.

It is important to note that the majority of people who fail the B+E test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard and not because of the manoeuvring exercises.
